Theatre Performance and research “Machine to become-Women”

“We have been questioning what exactly creates Woman, and how? If Woman even exists? What are the images we relate to Woman? We have found no other way to stay true to the fluctuating answers we've found, than being in a constant state of transformation to become-Woman. Initially inspired by the Deleuzian concept of becoming, then by The Cyborg Manifesto of Donna Haraway as well as the words of Sara Ahmed, Laurie Penny,Audre Lorde, Liv Strömquist and many other great visionaries, the experiment consists in a dialogue between words, movement and music. A confrontative, provocative performance grounded in playful improvisation that raises many questions and finds its own answers.”

This improvisational dance performance was built based on short words collected from the audience at the beginning of the show, by asking questions about cliché and prejudices about women in our time.My role was to support the feelings and tensions created by dancers Caroline Alves and Natalie Riedelsheimer and build up dynamics with live sound. The biggest challenge was the fact that it was improvisation and that I was required to respond with my sound instantly. For this reason, I chose to mainly work with metal percussion with piezo and effects.

In the early creative phase we applied a set of practical rules that we could follow during the improvisation to find techniques to build, shift and move through the "scenes". To keep up with the pace of the dancers, I reduced the electronics and focused on finding different tones, textures and timbres in metals, using different materials of objects to play with. In a later phase I developed sound designs and loops that represented different feelings and moods that would support dynamics in live scoring.
