Special Live Performance "The Sound of Your 3.11"
Commemorating the 10th anniversary of Fukushima Nuclear Disaster, this group performance was created as a result of an open call which more than 100 participated from all over the world by submitting sounds captured on 11th of March 2021. In response to the closure of live venues during COVID-19 pandemic, this performance was filmed and streamed as a part of a fundraising anti-nuclear festival/rally, founded and organised by Ryuichi Sakamoto.
On the 11th of March 2011, the most powerful earthquake recorded in Japan occurred in Tōhoku Region (Northeast Japan). Tsunami that came right afterwards swallowed the nearby towns including Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, which led to the catastrophic Nuclear Disaster. Nearly 20,000 were killed, over 2,500 went missing, over 6,000 got injured, half a million forced to evacuate, and acountless number of animals (pets, livestock and wild) left to die from radiation and hunger.
Remember the day as if it was yesterday, creating a commemorative piece had been no doubt. In the midst of pandemic, my intention was to create a piece that would bring a feeling of togetherness to counter social isolation. This project was started with an online open call to my existing artist network in the 10th anniversary year of 2021, encouraging the community to record and submit sounds heard on the day of 11th of March with their phones. This resulted in over 200 recordings from over 100 participants, which were then sampled and weaved into a sound documentation performed by Japanese sound artists, YPY, Blackphone 666, King Rambo Sound and myself, with the established visual artist rokapenis creating vivid and surrealistic moving images based on videos filmed at the siteof nuclear accident, also submitted to the open call.
The performance is planned to be released as the 4th edition of a fundraising VA compilation series i began releasing in the first year of COVID-19 pandemic, NO Recording in the year of 2024.
