Against the suffocation of a Japanese society that is often too strict,
the local scene has developed a touch of madness as a necessary and
natural outlet. This is evidenced by the math-rock-jazz of Mouse On The
Keys, the avant-garde pop of Tujiko Noriko and the body-experimental of
the performer Tot Onyx.
Experimental, avant-garde, underground are terms regularly used to define the
Japanese music scene. Often in opposition to the social and cultural
rigorism of the country, groups that protest or try to emancipate
themselves from the local norm are constantly emerging. Whether
they are rock, electro, experimental, pop or jazz, the artists all
develop a very “Japanese” specificity, a kind of madness, a very
palpable difference in reaction to (too?) strict standards, as if
looking for an escape, an outlet from this social lead blanket that
suffocates them. The result is a fascinating scene with
an overflowing personality. An eclectic scene united under the same
banner: a natural and particularly endearing originality.
